Beyond transportation, there are few issues of more pressing importance for the south metro area than access to secure, long term sources of water.

Much of our area is currently dependent on non-renewable ground water.

As Mayor, I championed a new water project for the city.  This required evaluation of various alternatives, and multiple ballot issues to fund the improvements in compliance with TABOR.  In the end, we opted for a tie in with the Denver system.  This $7.5 million dollar project was then the largest in the city’s history and was completed without a tax increase.  It did involve a long term repayment contract with Denver.  The terms of this arrangement were submitted to the voters, receiving overwhelming approval.

As County Commissioner, I worked to make sense of the Union Park project that previous commissioners had started.  This complex diversion project in the Gunnison Valley was eventually shut down by a State Supreme Court decision.  However, after researching the project and the history of the various Colorado River Compacts and related legislation, it became obvious that the federal government has been distorting the terms of these agreements to the detriment of the citizens of Colorado.

In Congress, I will fight to make Colorado’s share of natural resources available to the citizens of the state.
