The power to take property is among the most awful of any that government can exercise.

I will resist any effort to infringe on private property rights.  And not just the taking of property in a narrow sense, but degrading property values through overreaching environmental or other regulations.

My family once lost property to eminent domain.  I know first hand how painful it is when the government exercises this power.  As a result, I have never voted to involuntarily condemn anyone’s property, even for legitimate purposes such as road or other transportation improvements.

Full disclosure: there have been times when I have voted to condemn property, but only after the government  and the individual had reached an agreement on its value and terms of purchase.  These so called ‘friendly condemnations’ are used to allow the property owner access to special provisions under the tax code governing eminent domain.
