At home in
Colorado, I have served in city, county and state governments.
My focus has always been on limiting government, but also
ensuring that government is effective in the areas we expect it
to be. As Mayor, I led the successful effort to build an
entirely new
water system for the city,
improving the
roads, and making them safer with sidewalks, lighting, and
community policing. At the same time, taxes were lowered
substantially. I eliminated the municipal sales and use tax on
cars, use taxes on building materials, and lowered property
taxes substantially.
As Arapahoe
County Commissioner, the focus was on
transportation -
better streets, and
a jail big enough to keep criminals off them.
The portion
of the budget dedicated to roadway improvements increased in
real terms every year as Commissioner. I also led the
successful effort to expand the county jail. This was
done without increasing taxes, and with debt that was
approved by the voters in compliance with
TABOR.
This debt is now well on its way to being paid off.
